Electrical engineering is firstly defined as the sector or branch of engineering which deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism.

Before one is qualified as an Electrical engineer it takes gradual steps to reach the ultimate stage. There are a lot of things an electrical engineer should know right from the basics. The basics of electrical engineer serves as a foundation aimed at obtaining further knowledge and skills in electrical engineering field.


An electric and electronic engineering student must know the basic terms and definitions pertaining to the basic electrical engineering such; Charge, electric current, electric potential, potential difference, electric field, magnetic field, alternating current, direct current, resistance ,induction, capacitance, and so more

You must also develop knowledge on basic laws governing electrical engineering and their physical significance such as; Faraday’ law of electromagnetic, Lenz’s law, Ohm’s law, Ampere’s circuital law, Fleming’s right and left hand rule, Gauss’s law,etc.

The student should be good at mathematics such as algebra, trigonometry and Calculus

He/She should know how to fix and remove a fuse.

An electrical and electronic engineer student must have a reasonable and practical knowledge on electrical machines.

Should know how to repair, test and operate household appliances such as refrigerator, electric iron, electric fan, etc.

The student should be capable of understanding and should practice domestic wiring and house lighting.

He/She should be able to figure simple household faults including short circuit, ground fault, and insulation failure of certain equipments.

Should know what is phase, single phase and three phases.

Should be able to know all the grounding practices.
